We are excited to have your children in our Kindergarten classrooms this year. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns. The Kindergarten Team
One of the most important events in any child’s life is the first day of school! Help your child feel good about going to school. There are some skills you should help your child learn during the school year… Learn his/her first and last name Learn his/her address (street and #, city, state, and zip code) Learn his/her telephone number with the area code Learn the number of his/her bus and the bus driver’s name Learn his/her age and birthday (month, day, year) Learn to tie his/her shoes
Please be sure your child knows basic safety precautions, arrives promptly and attends school regularly, and knows how to use the bathroom independently.
It is helpful if you… Encourage your child to tell you about school. Realize that each child is different. Join PTA. Remind your child to keep all toys at home.
Lunch Your child will need a lunch with a drink or lunch money every day. If you pack an item that needs to remain cold, please put an ice pack in the lunch box. An option for frequent buyers is a “debit” card – more information about this lunch account program will be sent home from the cafeteria.
Snack and Quiet Time In the afternoon during Quiet Time, children will listen to music and rest on the carpet. During Snack Time, children may bring in one snack to have. You can send it in their backpack. Please make sure it is only one snack (pretzels OR cookies OR banana, etc.) and a drink, if you’d like.
Special Areas Your child needs to wear sneakers on Phys. Ed. days. Please remember to return library books with your child on Library days. Children need to keep an oversized t-shirt smock in their lockers for Art days and painting projects in the Kindergarten classroom.
Visitors Parents are welcome in the classroom; however, all parents must stop in the office to get a visitor pass before walking up the hall for any reason. Students are only dismissed to parents from the office where they can be signed out. Please do not come to the classroom to pick up children. We encourage parents to say good-bye to their children in the lobby and allow children to walk to their classrooms independently. We have 5th grade Safeties and teachers in the hallway to help direct students.
Absence Notes If your child is absent from school, please send a note when he/she returns stating the reason for the absence. Classroom teachers must code the attendance cards for the office.
Changes in Routines If for some reason there is a change in dismissal routine for your child, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Early dismissal notes will be forwarded to the office. If your child usually rides a bus, but will be parent pick-up instead, we must have a note. Without a note, your child will be put on his/her regular bus.
Conferences Kindergarten students have conference days scheduled in the Fall and Spring. At that time, students receive a Fall and Spring Progress Report, respectively. Kindergarten students do not have a report card for 2nd or 4th terms. Teachers are also willing to schedule conferences any time at a parent’s request. Change of Clothes Although Kindergarten classes take regular bathroom breaks and teachers let children us the bathroom when they ask, there are times when accidents do happen. You may want to send in a change of under garments and bottoms for your child to keep in the top of his/her locker.
Birthdays We enjoy celebrating student birthdays! If you would like to send in a birthday treat on or near your child’s birthday, send in a note to the teacher. All food shared in the classroom must be pre-packaged/store bought according to Baltimore County Public School policy. Sorry, no homemade goodies. Summer birthdays can be celebrated at the end of the year.
