STEM Fair General Information The Relay STEM Fair is coming back! All students in grades four and five will be creating projects to investigate a topic of interest. Projects must be in school by 9:00 AM on April 22, 2009 for preliminary judging on the 22nd and 23rd. Final judging will be held on the morning of April 24th by a distinguished panel of judges. Students must be present for the interview component of the project.
We are very proud of all of our students who take part in the STEM Fair! Relay students show a wealth of new learning and understanding, and they have fun and learn new skills.

Interactive "How To" Web Program Available Virtual STEM Fair Portal A program is available to help students and their families work through the Science Fair process. This interactive program was created by our very own Mrs. Benson to help students with every step in the process, from generating ideas through research and carrying out a process to the final backboard presentation of the investigation.

Cautions & Prohibitions Projects must be investigations; models and demonstrations will not qualify as investigations. Students must begin with a question that could be answered by conducting an investigation following research of the topic. If the question can be answered simply by asking a question or is information that is widely known, it does not make a good subject for an investigational project.
Please note that projects may not deal with: live animals or human subjects in a treatment situation or molds, fungi, or bacteria of any kind. Observational projects may be conducted, but students must follow the guidelines. An example of an observational project would be to observe people entering a mall to determine how many use their right or left hand to open the door. However, this example would not be a strong subject for an investigation.

Safe Racer, Grade 3 Third grade students participate in Safe Racer. In their classes, they construct a Safe Racer to protect their passenger, Eggbert (a raw egg), while traveling the greatest distance. The finalists will participate in the Baltimore County Public Schools STEM Fair competition of 2009 at Randallstown High School.

Exhibit of Wonder-Grades Pre-K to 2 Although children at this age are not ready to carry out an investigation following the scientific method, they certainly have interest in science topics and wonder about all kinds of ideas, don't they? We invite these children to learn more about a topic of interest and create a display for the exhibit. The display could be a photographic journal of a trip to the zoo or aquarium with captions, a display of a collection of items such as rocks and minerals or shells or artifacts or ....

Research 101, aka Research Made Easy Online Research Made Easy Check out the BCPS research databases! Here students can search for information on their topic from a much narrower range...not like sifting through all the hits if googling, etc. In addition, the program creates a bibliography/list of resources for the students! I will be conducting a tutorial for students on how to use these Science E-books for their research. Once a source is requested, a password will be required: students know the password for bcps schools:)
