When is your child too sick to come to school? Sometimes it is difficult to decide whether or not to send your child to school. The daily decision should always be weighted in favor of having your child present in class. Not only does Maryland law require parents to send a child to school everyday, but daily attendance helps children succeed academically. However, there will be times when your child should be absent due to an acute illness. Keeping your child at home will reduce the number of ill students at school and prevent the spread of germs. In addition, your child will be much more comfortable recuperating at home.

In general your child should stay home: - if there is fever of 100 degrees or higher anytime during the past 24 hours - if symptoms such as headache, drowsiness, runny nose etc. are disabling - if vomiting or diarrhea have been present in the preceding 24 hours - if there is a pink eye with white or yellow discharge (child needs to be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school) - if child has a strep infection (child needs to be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school)
