6th Grade East Asia Unit Overview
Asia
East Asia is the longest Unit we will have this year. It is the last unit in our study of World Cultures in 6th Grade. It is also by far my favorite unit! Since the Unit is so long, we will break it down into two separate pieces, China followed by Japan. If time permits, we will also study the cultures of other Asian countries after we have completed the indicators below.

Overarching Unit Questions:
· How have the geography and history influenced the social, political and economic development of East Asia?
· What role do traditional values, beliefs, and institutions play in today’s East Asian community?

Indicators: Indicators are like mini-units. Each indicator usually takes about 1-2 weeks (occasionally a little more time depending on the weekly schedule)
Part 1- China and Economics-
A. Students will interpret and construct maps to locate places and natural features of Northern China in order to determine how geographic features influence the development of a civilization.
B. Analyze maps and statistical data of East Asian countries in order to describe the role of scarcity in economic decision-making.
C. Analyze the dynastic cycle in order to determine how beliefs and institutions unified Ancient China.
D. Examine the Tang and Yuan Dynasties in order to evaluate their influence on European and Asian cultures.
E. Analyze the Chinese and Communist Revolutions in order to evaluate the economic and political decisions made by the government during the 19th and 20th centuries.
F. Examine political, economic, and human rights issues in Modern China in order to draw conclusions about the conflicts between conscience and respect for authority.

Part 2- Japan
A. Analyze the social and political structures of Feudal Japan in order to draw conclusions about the influence such structures have on societal change and growth.
B. Examine the causes and effects of Japanese imperialism in order to draw conclusions about how such economic and military practices can lead to conflict.
C. Examine the practices and beliefs of Asian philosophies/religions such as Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism in order to analyze how cultural practices in Japan today reflect cultural diffusion.
D. Examine elements of Japanese society such as the educational system, the home, and business community in order to evaluate the role of traditional values in contemporary Japan.
