Latin America Overview

Indicators:
A. Interpret and construct maps to locate places, cultural features, and natural features of Latin America in order to compare the region of Latin America to other defined regions such as South America and Central America.
B. Analyze the settlement patterns of how Latin America was populated in order to draw conclusions about the relationship between environmental characteristics and population density.
C. Examine Pre-Columbian societies such as the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas in order to apply criteria used by archaeologists to define the word civilization.
D. Outline and describe the social, political, and economic impact of European colonization of Latin America in order to identify and evaluate the positive and negative consequences of this cultural diffusion.
E. Examine selected political independence movements of 19th-century Latin America in order to evaluate their degree of effectiveness in creating lasting political stability.
F. Analyze the issue of deforestation of the South American rainforest in order to formulate recommendations for protecting the environment while meeting human needs.
