| Welcome to Ms. Varner's First Grade Class! |
It is a pleasure to teach First Grade for the 2009-2010 school year. I am very excited to be working with your child. I graduated from Towson University with my bachelors in Early Childhood Education. I am currently getting my masters in Reading through Towson University.
Our school wide behavior management system distributes High Fives or tickets for those students who make good choices. At the end of the week, the students count all their High Fives, and the student with the highest will choose a prize from my treasure box.
This year is an important year for you and your child. We will be developing our reading skills by focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. We will also explore many new concepts in math such as place value, counting money and strategies for addition and subtraction facts.
In addition, we are doing a book-it program where your child will need to read 15 minutes a night. You will need to sign off on the monthly calendar in order to receive the personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
Here are some helpful activities that can be fun for you and your student: -reading with your child -listening to your child read -sight word flash cards or Memory -I Spy (for example- "I spy something that starts with the /r/ sound.") -number building (for example- "How can you make the number 5?" An answer could be 2+3 or 6-1 or 5 ones or a picture.) -Go Fish with number cards, shape cards, or fraction cards -having your child count your loose change
