Welcome to First Grade!!
I hope that everyone had a fun summer and that you are ready for a great year in first grade. This year is an important year for you and your child. We will be developing our reading skills by focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. We will also explore many new concepts in math such as place value, counting money and strategies for addition and subtraction facts.
Here are some helpful activities that can be fun for you and your student:
-reading with your child
-listening to your child read
-sight word flash cards or Memory
-I Spy (for example- "I spy something that starts with the /r/ sound.")
-number building (for example- "How can you make the number 5?" An answer could be 2+3 or 6-1 or 5 ones or a picture.)
-Go Fish with number cards, shape cards, or fraction cards
-have your child count your loose change
