Click here for extra facts practice activities During the 2005-06 school year, I had the opportunity to pilot the Scott Foresman Math program. It was a wonderful experience and I found that the program offers the basic instruction along with the added challenge that the students need to be successful. I am happy to say that this program was chosen and will be implemented across BCPS for the 2006-07 school year. |

| One program that we implement throughout 2nd grade is a weekly fast facts quiz. We encourage students to practice and memorize thier basic addition and subtraction facts to 18. One way you can help your child this summer is to practice these facts. |

| We focus on many math skills in 2nd grade that have a true real life application. Topics such as money, time, measurement, and use of a calculator are easy to practice in daily life. Find opportunities for your child to practice these skills everyday. This will not only allow children extra practice, but it will also help them to see the importance of math in thier life. |

We will be focusing a great deal on writing in Math throughout the year. Each time we learn a new skill or build on a skill that was introduced in 1st grade, the students will be asked to explain their thinking. You can help with this at home by asking your child to explain HOW they did their homework each night. Make sure they are using math vocabulary in their explanation. Ask some of the following questions: *What strategies did you use? *What were the steps you took to get your answer? *What if this problem used different numbers? Would you still use the same steps?
Talking with your child about their thinking process will make it much easier for them to express themselves in writing. |

| One area that many of the students struggle with in math is vocabulary. As we learn new skills the students will be expected to use the proper mathematical terms to explain and label thier answers. Please encourage your child to use these words at home as they complete homework and other assignments. |
