Playground Equipment Rules
1. No running or playing tag.
2. Two hands on equipment at all times (no standing or sitting on railings or equipment.)
3. Leave space between you and the people around you. Take turns to avoid over crowding.
4. Monkey bars are ONE way.
5. Do not throw mulch or sand.
6. Use equipment as it was meant to be used.
7. No jumping off of equipment—climb down safely.
8. Go forward on your bottom down the slide.
9. Proper dress is required—tennis shoes ONLY!

Students will still have P.E. class on picture day, dress-up day, and field trips, please help them to remember their Physical Education shoes.
Appropriate dress for P.E.:
1. long or short pants
2. tennis shoes that must tie or Velcro – NO SLIP ONS - NO CROCS
3. no jewelry because of possible injury to self or others
If a student is to be excused from class for that day, send a note with a brief explanation, as there may be another activity in which they could be involved. If it is to be for an extended time, please send a doctor’s note.
Students are also encouraged to set aside time outside of school to practice as a way of building endurance. Other available activities that lead to accomplishment of cardiovascular endurance include: biking, skating, jogging, walking, soccer, tag games, rope jumping and participating in the one mile after school runs (grades 3, 4, 5).
Please encourage children to be actively involved as a way to improve their quality of life. Developing good attitudes and habits now can help formulate and enhance their future adult life.

Jump Rope for Heart
American Heart Association
Riderwood students will jump, February 25 - 29 2008. Students will receive parent permission letters in January. Please return the signed parent permission letter to receive a money collection envelope.

Jump Rope for Heart Parent Permission

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Dear Parents or Guardians,
Riderwood Elementary is gearing up to jump into the fight against the number one killer—HEART DISEASE! Once again our Physical Education Department and the American Heart Association are sponsoring the JUMP ROPE FOR HEART EVENT. This is our 12th annual jump, to take place February 25-29. The money our school raises helps fund potentially lifesaving research for heart and blood vessel diseases.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART is a fun and effective way to teach heart-healthy living. This emphasizes the importance of physical activity as the students participate in an activity they enjoy-rope jumping.
Prizes are awarded on an individual basis. Every student turning in their COLLECTION ENVELOPE on the day of the jump with a $15.00 donation will receive a jump rope that day. You may also register on-line: http://teachers.bcps.org/teachers%5Felem/lwilliamson/
Classes will jump during their Physical Education time the week of February 25.
One final note: Our jumping event will not be possible without your volunteering to help.
