November email Mrs. Fisher Greetings My goal is to update my website on a monthly basis to keep parents up to speed on what is occuring in my classroom.
Thanks to the excellent planning on the part of our room parents. All of us enjoyed a fabulous party to celebrate Halloween. We used the holiday as a catalyst for some fun reading and math activities. The first quarter of school ends the first Friday in November. At this juncture, I believe my reading and math groups are appropriate. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns regarding reading and math placement. Take a look ahead at November's calendar. Calendar Fri. 11/06 No school for students
Thurs. 11/19 Book Fair and parent visitation
Mon. 11/23 Parent Conferences
Thurs. & Fri. 11/26 11/27 Thanksgiving Break
Mon. 11/30 Fire Safety Program
Reading
Thank you kindly for the timely reponses to sign up for a conference. If I have not confirmed your conference time, and you would like to have one, contact me soon to get on the schedule. Though I haven't finalized Theme 2 test scores, it appears that out of 20 students, 8 scored in the 90s, which is an impressive percentage of high scores. This month we'll begin Theme 3 which is entitled Around Town. The stories deal with the various cultures that make up our country. Ideally, I'd like the students to take the 3rd theme test before winter break. In the written language area children most recently wrote beautiful nature poems modeled after a couple we read in the anthology. You'll be able to see writing samples during your conference.
Math
Hopefully, students have gotten a chance to navigate the math offerings on Success Net. For those who are interested in some extra math ideas, it's a great option. Passwords and directions were sent out in late October. On our 2nd math test, over half the class scored over 90%. We progressing well on our new unit which encompasses 2 digit problem solving. Students will use the number lines and 100s charts, as needed. Notice will be given in the agendas as to when the 3rd test will be administered.
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
The class took advantage of the gorgeous mild weather to go outdoors to observe trees. We have quite a collection of natural treasures on our counter. We did our best to identify some of the leaves found on our playground. We also estimated the ages of some of the large maple trees on the front lot. We read about products derived from trees and the parts of a tree. This month we'll learn about communities in different times, which is a nice lead into some history about Thanksgiving.
COMPUTER LAB Miss Gisriel is doing a splendid job of enriching the reading and writing via technology. Perhaps you have seen some of the activities done in the lab to analyze stories read in class. She'll do some lessons related to the stories in Theme 3 in the lab.
OTHER I was elated with the temperance the students showed at the fall party. Of course Halloween is an exciting time for children. To their credit, they combined a celebratory spirit with excellent self management. I saw lots of good manners and gratitude from the students towards the thoughtful generous parents who donated so much to make their day memorable. Thanks for your part in providing me with such excellent children. |
