Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum Math Standards
Students will learn a variety of new math skills this year. The Baltimore County Math Curriculum which incorporates the Scott Foresman Addison Wesley textbook series includes 11 units.

Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum Reading Standards
In second grade students use the Houghton Mifflin anthology series to learn reading skills and practice reading stories. The six second grade anthology themes are listed below.

Theme 4: Amazing Animals
Theme 5: Family Time

On second grade report cards, the following scale is used to measure performance:

I = Independent - Consistent application and meaningful use of skills
P = Progressing - Frequent application and extension of skills
E = Emerging - Beginning acquisition and occasional application of skills
N = Needs Improvement - No acquisition or application of skills
Homework
How You Can Help Your Child at Home
Students receive a weekly homework sheet on which they write down their homework assignments given Monday through Thursday. Please initial your child's homework sheet nightly and return it every day.

In addition to the nightly math and phonics homework, students are expected to read for at least 15 minutes. Please initial the monthly reading log when your child completes his or her reading.
