Syllabus: AP Environmental Science
Course Overview:

As stated in the Course Description for AP Environmental Science (2006), this a yearlong course designed “to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.” Also, it “is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory college course in environmental science.” The lectures, labs, and additional activities will function to prepare to achieve these goals and to pass the AP exam in May or the course final designed by the instructor.

Lecture will be conducted mainly via PowerPoint covering key concepts and vocabulary. Material presented will parallel that of the text Living in the Environment (Miller, 2005), which you are expected to read ahead of time as assigned. It is important that you get access to a computer, either at home or at the library, so you can complete all online and CD assignments/quizzes. In addition, you need to have a 3-ring binder to take notes and compile assignments. All notes from text and lecture will be conducted using Cornell Note format.

Labs and research papers will allow you to explore concepts learned in more depth. All labs reports will be need to be typed and follow the Investigations in Environmental Science Rubric. Periodically we will be going outside to conduct field investigations and it is important that you have appropriate clothing and footwear (I will let you know ahead of time).

Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES) is an interdisciplinary course and will require you draw from previous courses such as chemistry, biology, geology, and ecology, as well as math. Much like a college course, APES will challenge you to be self-motivated and focused throughout the year. I will be available after school through appointment for any additional help or to address questions or concerns.

Attendance/Absences

It is paramount that you take ownership of your learning. If you miss class for whatever reason contact a colleague and find out what you need to begin working on. You will be given only 1 class period for every day missed in order to finish missed assignments. Late assignments will be deducted one grade for every day they are late. Additional things to consider include:

1. As stated in BCPS policy, 3 unexcused or 6 excused absences within one quarter can result in a failing grade.
2. Two hall passes will be granted per semester. Students must use their OWN success guide (NOT ripped out sheet). Lost/damaged guides can be replaced for $5 at the student store.
