Grade Six Standard Math
Fractions
Fractions, Decimals, Percents Oh My!
This year our students in Standard Grade Six Math will be exposed to and master the following skills. All skills align to the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum which is assessed on the Maryland State Assessment (MSA) in April. Unit One focuses on Number Sense which includes writing numbers in exponential form, evaluating expressions using the order of operations, and working with variables and variable expressions as an introduction to solving equations. Unit Two focuses on Decimals and Equivalent Forms, which is used to facilitate the transition into Unit 3, Number Theory with Fractions. Unit 5 focuses on the Foundations of Geometry. Unit 6 is the overview of integers as opposites of whole numbers, bringing us to Unit 7, Statistics. Unit 8 is a continuation of Unit 5, Geometry: The Sequel. Unit 9 is Pre-Algebra, which connects and extends the Pre-Algebra skills introduced and taught in grade 6 with the grade 7 assessed objectives. Our last unit, Unit 10 is Fractions Revisited; these skills will not be assessed on MSA but are important for students to understand non-the-less. While this curriculum looks overwhelming, a lot of the skills build upon skills already learned in Elementary School.
