Science Classroom Procedures 2010-2011
1) Students will line up in the hallway outside of the classroom and remain there quietly until a teacher gives permission to enter the room.
***Students on Level 3 or Gold Level do not need to line up with the rest of the class; Level 3 and Gold Level students may enter the classroom as long as there is a teacher in the classroom.
2) Once given permission, students will enter the classroom in an appropriate manner (not screaming and yelling, keeping their hands to themselves, following all directions given by teachers, etc…) and go directly to their assigned bin where they will remove their “transition binder,” their drill, and any other materials they are asked to.
3) Students will then proceed directly and appropriately (not screaming and yelling, keeping their hands to themselves, following all directions given by teachers, etc…) to their assigned seat.
4) Once in their assigned seat, students will place their agenda (open to the current date) and their point sheet on the appropriate spot (as marked on their desk.) Students will be given 2 weeks from the beginning of school to master this procedure. After that time, if students do not have their point sheet in the appropriate place on the desk, staff will not ask for students to present the point sheet and the student will receive a 0 (zero) for the class period.
5) After placing the agenda and point sheet on the correct spot on their desk, students will begin their drill. Typically, students will have about 5 (five) minutes to complete this drill.
6) At the conclusion of the 5 (five) minute drill period, instruction will begin. Students are expected to follow all rules/expectations outlined in the Blue Team handbook while in science class (raising their hand and not calling out, being respectful of ALL adults and students, remaining focused and on task, remaining in their assigned seat, keeping their hands and feet to themselves, not throwing things in class, not using inappropriate language, etc….) As well, because this is a science classroom and different chemicals, materials, and equipment may be stored in various areas, students are only allowed in the “lecture” and the “lab” areas of the classroom unless specifically given permission from a teacher to enter any other area (such as the science office, storage closets, storage lockers, etc…)
7) During the last 5 (five) minutes of class, students will write down any homework assignments which may have been given (students will write “none” in their agenda book if there is no assigned homework). Teachers will sign point sheets during these last 5 (five) minutes of class.
8) At the end of class, students will be called to line up by teachers. It is important for students to remember that the teachers dismiss the class, NOT the bell. Students will be expected to line up and exit the classroom in the same manner they entered (not screaming and yelling, keeping their hands to themselves, following all directions given by teachers, etc….) As students are called to line up they will be responsible for returning their transition binder and anything else the teacher asks to their assigned bin.
***Students on Level 3 or Gold Level will be dismissed first from the classroom. These students will not be required to wait in line with the rest of the class as they have earned the privilege to move unescorted to their next class.
9) Any work (such as labs) completed during the class period will be placed in the appropriate “completed work” boxes located next to the classroom door as students exit the classroom. Students will be reminded of this procedure for the first few weeks of school, however, if after the first few weeks of school work is not handed into these “completed work” boxes, the student is likely to receive a 0 (zero) for each assignment not placed in the “completed work” box. Additionally, papers handed in with no name written on them will also be given a grade of 0 (zero) if the teacher can not immediately figure out to whom the work belongs.
NOTE: While in science class, students will always have their “transition binder” with them. This binder will be filled with extension activities which students are expected to complete independently if they finish all other assigned class work early. As a result of these transition activities, students will always have something to work on in science class – no matter how quickly they complete the daily assigned class work (teachers will add new activities to the binders as needed)
