Eligibility
Your participation in athletics may help to make high school the most enjoyable time in your young life. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and the Baltimore County Public School System wants to ensure that you understand and meet all eligibility requirements for participation in interscholastic sports. The standards and policies highlighted on this webpage apply to all student-athletes. Your athletic director or coach can provide you with further clarification and/or summary of these standards and guidelines.


All prospective student-athletes must meet the minimum academic requirements for Baltimore County Public Schools when trying out for a sport. These guidelines include, but not limited to the following:

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY refers to the academic performance of an individual, i.e., NO MORE THAN ONE (1) FAILING GRADE the marking period preceding the sport season (and all rules for academic eligibility below).

(1) Fourth (4th) Marking Period grades determine Fall sport eligibility for INCOMING 9TH GRADE STUDENTS and 10-12 students.
(2) First (1st) Marking Period grades determine the continuation of Fall sports and Winter sports eligibility.
(3) Second (2nd) Marking Period determines the continuation of Winter sports participation and Spring sport eligibility.
(4) Third (3rd) Marking Period determines the continuation of Spring sport participation.

NOTE: Attending summer school DOES NOT change academic eligibility for participation in a Fall sport. See your guidance counselor if you are recommended to attend summer school for other academic reasons.

**************ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS**************

Any student attending a Baltimore County Public School’s high school without the benefit of residing within the school’s attendance area and/or without the written authority of the superintendent’s designee or the pupil personnel worker will be declared ineligible for participation in interscholastic athletics.


Eligibility refers to meeting the age requirement for participation –must not be 19 years of age as of August 31st of the new school year enrolled.

Eligibility refers to not exceeding the maximum number of years allowed to participate in a sport – i.e., “starting with the 10th grade, a student has 3 years of eligibility in a sport.

Eligibility refers to meeting the criteria for legally transferring to another school in Baltimore County, or from outside of the BCPS system. Students entering a Baltimore County high school after September 30 and before November 15 shall be ineligible to represent the school in interscholastic athletic competition during the first semester unless such late entrance shall be by transfer from a school which the student has attended regularly during the current school year. Cases involving students who enter after November 15 will be decided by the principal and coordinator of the Office of Athletics. If a student transfers during a sport season and the transfer is not the result of a parental change of address or court-ordered guardianship, the student is not eligible to participate in the same sport in which he/she participated at the previous school for the remainder of the sport season (NOTE: Participation in a sport begins with the first day of team tryouts).

Eligibility refers to By State rule 13A.06.03, individual student-athletes may participate in TWO All-Star games per sport, upon the completion of their eligibility in the sport in which this participation occurs.

Eligibility refers to student-athletes who may lose amateur status by using athletic skill as players for financial gain or by competing under an assumed name. Students shall also lose amateur status in a particular sport if they sign a professional contract in that sport. Students who have ceased to be amateurs in a particular sport may not represent a school in interscholastic athletics in that sport.

Eligibility refers to a student who may not have graduated from high school in a previous semester.

Eligibility refers to being in compliance with all school, county, and state regulations governed by their rules and regulations.

In order to qualify for post-season awards, the student-athlete must complete the season in good standing and fulfill all team-related obligations. "In good standing" also includes, but not limited to remaining eligible FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON.
