| Homework Strategies That Work! |
 |
Getting your Middle-Schooler to complete homework can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting! |
Completing homework on time contributes to school success, and establishes student responsibility.
Four Things You Can Do To Help Your Middle-Schooler With Homework |
1. Show that you think education and homework are important. |
- Set a regular time and place for completing homework.
- Have homework supplies readily avaliable.
- Encourage student responsiblity for completing homework, BUT don't be afraid to check up on your student!
- Talk with your child about homework assignments. (This also helps facilitate regular communication!)
- Take time EACH day to organize and clean your child's binder.
|
2. Monitor your child's work. |
- Know the teachers' expectations and grading procedures. Check out the teachers' websites or Homework Hotline daily to check homework assignments.
- Read and initial your student's planner, if necessary. The planner is the MOST EFFECTIVE way to daily communicate with teachers. Encourage your student to regularly use his or her planner.
- Check returned assignments for teacher comments.
|
3. Provide guidance, not answers. |
- Don't do the assignments yourself! If your student gets stuck, help him or her solve the problem without giving the answer.
- Encourage good STUDY habits. Sometimes homework is not enough and extra review time is necessary.
- Consider breaking up larger assignments into segments. Often, students need to take a break after 20-30 minutes.
|
4. Talk with your child's teachers if a problem arises. |
- Teachers are your primary resource for academic help! Check out the teachers' websites. E-mail, phone, or set up a meeting to communicate with your student's teachers.
- Create a plan to solve homework or class work problems. Follow up with the teacher to ensure the plan is working.
