Teacher of the Year Activities '08-'09
TOY

7/8/08 The cruise...
All of the teachers of the year had the opportunity to take a cruise from Annapolis, MD to St. Micheal's on the eastern shore. In route we had the opportunity to meet the various people and organizations that support the Teacher of the Year program, as well as the other TOY's from all the other counties. I had the opportunity to meet the MCDonald's and Northrop Grumman sponsors. Though I'm not the best socializer, I found the conversations refreshing. I also felt affirmed in the direction I think education is going. I got to have a lengthy discussion with Dunbar Brooks, he's the President of the Maryland Board of Education. He's intelligent well-spoken man who provided a glimpse into the challenges educational reform faces. Two crabcakes later and stroll around St. Micheals's brought me into an interesting conversation with several middle school TOY's from the shore counties, they were funny:) As short MPT interview (I looked tired and sunburned) and the cruise was over. Til next time...

8/20/08
Gave my first TOY presentation at the back-to-school Social Studies professional development conference. High teachers in the morning and the middle school teachers in the afternoon. We met in a hot cafeteria at Parkville HS, but despite the facility conditions it seemed as if they were pretty motivated when they left. I talked about what excites me about the up-coming school year, then a multimedia presentation entitled "This I Believe" and ended with a video clip of slma poetry by Taylor Mali called "What do teacher make."

Found out that I'm a Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist. and the excitement builds:)
