Perry Hall Middle School Student Expectations in Science, 2009-2010 Mrs. Carlineo Room 129
Dear Parents, The following information is provided to you and your child as a guideline for your child's success in science class this year. If you have any questions about your child's progress or our science program, please call or email me (410-887-5100; wcarlineo@bcps.org). I look forward to working with you and your child!
1. Supplies All students are expected to bring the following to class: a. a one subject s p i r a l notebook b. a pocket folder(GT Science only) c. a 30 cm ruler, pencil, pen, and highlighter d. a three-ring binder as described below
2. Notebook One section in the looseleaf binder will be reserved for science. a. Spiral notebook- Students will place all vocabulary and drills in this notebook. The first 7 sheets will be set aside for vocabulary. One week's drills should be contained on one sheet of looseleaf paper. Drills must be copied and completed daily. Pocket folders are for formal lab reports.
b. Science Activities Section A Table of Contents listing all activities will be at the front of this section. Behind it, all activities will be numbered and placed in this section consecutively. Students should use the sample binder and drill book to better organize their notes and remain up-to-date on assignments.
c. Homework Students will carry planners for recording homework assignments. Homework will be assigned at least four nights a week. Students are expected to complete their homework assignments on time. Late slips, signed by a parent must accompany all late work. Late work will not receive full credit.
3. Absences In the case of absence from school or class, it is the student's responsibility to find out about and make up missed work. Homework will be recorded on the team website daily. In addition, after school coach class will be held on Wednesday afternoons to assist students.

4. Classroom Conduct (respectful, responsible and ready to learn) All students are expected to behave properly. They should: a. arrive on time. b. avoid distracting other students by making noice, talking, or engaging in other disruptive actions. c. treat others with respect. d. follow the directions of the teacher. e. try his or her best!
5. Participation It is very important for students to take an active part in classwork and discussions. Students are highly encouraged to ask questions and offer insights about science topics. Students will work in cooperative groups frequently and be using many different pieces of technology.
6. Grading
Grades will be averaged in each of the 3 sections: classwork, homework, and assessments. In order to determine a studentˇ¦s quarterly grade, the aforementioned sections will be weighted as follows: CLASSWORK .............................. 50% ASSESSMENTS ............................ 30% HOMEWORK ............................... 20%
Score reports for each class will be printed every Monday. Your child is encouraged to check for his/her overall average and grades on individual assignments. He/she has received a random 3-digit number for the purpose of keeping the data anonymous. Averages are listed from highest to lowest. Please encourage your child to submit all assignments so that ZEROES are not averaged in! |
